Contemporary Dance Performance | 2015Co-Director | Cinematographer | Editor | Sand-raker
This was a collaboration with Holly Taylor exploring the ephemerality of dance improvisation by momentarily capturing the movements as marks in sand.
I built a sandbox and rake operating on a pulley system. After a few rehearsals, Holly and I decided on a call and response structure for the piece. The improvised dance phrases became longer and more complicated over time, and the rake struggled to reset the sand after each phrase. The piece was performed in the Yale School of Art Edgewood Sculpture Building. The video feed presented here was projected live onto a wall adjacent to the sandbox during the performance.
